Clarivate has released its 2026 Top 100 Global Innovators report—the 15th edition of its annual benchmark. This list honors organizations that consistently produce high-impact inventions. Moreover, it reveals how innovation leadership is shifting from scale to precision, with artificial intelligence (AI) now driving this transformation.
The Top 100 Global Innovators stand out for their invention quality, originality, and global reach. In fact, together they generate a disproportionate share of the world’s most valuable ideas. Consequently, their success demonstrates that strategic intent matters more than sheer volume.
Maroun S. Mourad, President of Intellectual Property at Clarivate, emphasized this point: “Recognition as a Top 100 Global Innovator is a remarkable achievement. In 2026, we feature 16 all-time recipients. Furthermore, both long-standing leaders and new entrants are investing heavily in AI, which is blurring the lines between research, engineering, and commercialization.”
Indeed, AI is no longer optional—it has become embedded in the innovation process. Since 2019, AI-related patent filings have doubled repeatedly. By mid-2025, over one million AI invention specifications were published. Notably, generative AI and deep learning are now the fastest-moving tech frontiers. As a result, the Top 100 Global Innovators account for 16% of the world’s strongest AI inventions—proving that leadership today hinges on quality, not just quantity.
Geographically, Japan continues to lead with 32 organizations, including five in the top 10. Meanwhile, the United States follows with 18 companies, then Taiwan (12), and Germany and South Korea (8 each). Additionally, Mainland China and the Netherlands show notable growth. Ireland and Saudi Arabia, after an absence, have also returned to the list this year.
Samsung Electronics retains its #1 position. On the other hand, six companies appear on the list for the first time: Aptiv, CXMT, GE Vernova, Silicon Motion, Subaru, and ZTE. Similarly, six others have re-entered: Apple, KLA, LG Display, Saudi Aramco, Signify, and TCL Technology.
Importantly, sixteen organizations have earned Top 100 status every year since the list began. These include Boeing, Dow, Ericsson, Fujitsu, Hitachi, Honda, Honeywell, LG Electronics, NEC, Panasonic, Qualcomm, Samsung Electronics, Shin-Etsu Chemical, Sony, Toshiba, and Toyota. Their sustained presence underscores long-term commitment to innovation excellence.
This analysis comes from the Clarivate Center for IP and Innovation Research. Specifically, it uses the Derwent Strength Index—a metric based on the Derwent World Patents Index—to evaluate idea influence, rarity, and commercial potential.
To qualify, organizations must meet strict thresholds for invention strength and consistent international patenting over five years. Therefore, the list reflects sustained excellence rather than isolated breakthroughs.
