Veteran journalist and local councillor Mike Stoddart has died aged 85, prompting an outpouring of tributes from across Pembrokeshire and the wider West Wales community. Stoddart, who founded his own local newspaper before embarking on a long career in local politics, died peacefully at Withybush General Hospital on Sunday, January 4, surrounded by his family.
Mike Stoddart was best known in journalism circles for helping to establish the Milford & West Wales Mercury in the 1990s. The newspaper later changed ownership several times before ceasing its print edition in 2020, but it played a significant role in strengthening local reporting and accountability during its early years.
After leaving frontline journalism, Stoddart transitioned into public service, representing the Hakin ward on Pembrokeshire County Council for more than 22 years. During his time as a councillor, he earned a reputation for rigorous scrutiny, independence of thought and a strong commitment to residents’ interests.
Alongside his council duties, Stoddart continued writing through his “Old Grumpy” website, where he published frequent and often sharply critical commentary on council affairs, governance standards and public accountability. The platform became widely read locally and reflected his enduring belief in transparent, answerable local government.
Tributes from colleagues highlighted both his integrity and influence. Cllr Simon Hancock, the council’s presiding member, described Stoddart as “passionate, fearless and always exercising the greatest scrutiny in holding authorities to account,” adding that he was “a man of high principles” who would be greatly missed.
Council leader Cllr Jon Harvey said Stoddart embodied the values of effective local representation, calling him “the prime example of what someone in local politics should be – working for and demanding better for his constituents.”
Stoddart, who lived in Liddeston near Milford Haven, is survived by his wife Vivien and daughter Tessa, both of whom have also served as councillors, continuing the family’s tradition of public service.
A celebration of his life will be held at Parc Gwyn Crematorium in Narberth on Tuesday, February 3, at 2.30pm, followed by refreshments at the Lord Nelson Hotel in Milford Haven. Donations in his memory will support Hubberston & Hakin Community Centre.
