The 15-second teaser for the ad, titled The Final Course, gives a brief glimpse into Lanthimos’s signature surrealist style. Known for his offbeat cinematography, dark humor, and oddball dialogue, the Greek director is a perfect fit for Grubhub’s playful approach to their first-ever Super Bowl commercial.

In the teaser, the camera pans across a lavish dining table, stacked with vibrant, mouth-watering dishes. The rich, detailed set design is reminiscent of Lanthimos’s film Poor Things, featuring eccentric characters in unique outfits. The scene is set for something out of the ordinary, with a waiter arriving to unveil a mysterious dish beneath a silver cloche. As the lid lifts, the ad cuts to a point-of-view shot from the plate, revealing an assortment of quirky characters peering curiously into the camera.

The full mystery behind the ‘final course’ will remain unsolved until the full ad airs during the Super Bowl broadcast on February 8th, but the teaser is already creating buzz with its signature Lanthimos oddity.

While this marks Lanthimos’s Super Bowl debut, he’s no stranger to commercials. Before his career took off in cinema, he directed ads in Greece in the late 1990s and was part of the creative team behind the 2004 Athens Summer Olympics opening and closing ceremonies. With his unique style now making its mark in the world of advertising, viewers can expect a memorable and surreal take on the usual blockbuster commercials.
