Lynn Jones, a longtime Jacksonville Jaguars beat writer, found herself at the center of a media storm after the team’s disappointing loss to the Buffalo Bills in the opening round of the NFL playoffs. During the postgame press conference, Jones, a veteran reporter with the Jacksonville Free Press, offered words of encouragement to Jaguars head coach Liam Coen, which sparked significant backlash from some media members.
The Remarks That Sparked Controversy
After the loss, Jones addressed Coen, saying, “You hold your head up, all right? You guys have had a most magnificent season. And you did a great job out there today.” She continued, “So you just hold your head up, okay? Ladies and gentlemen, Duval, you the one, all right? Keep it going. We got another season, OK? Take care of much continued success to you and the entire team.”
While Jones’ message appeared to come from a place of support and positivity, it didn’t sit well with some members of the media. Many voiced their displeasure, particularly over the tone and nature of the comments, which some felt were out of place in a professional sports press conference.
Social Media Backlash
Mark Long, a reporter for the Associated Press (AP), expressed his frustration on social media: “Nothing ‘awesome’ about fans/fake media doing stuff like that. It should be embarrassing for the people who credentialed her and her organization, and it’s a waste of time for those of us actually working.”
Similarly, Jenna Laine, an ESPN reporter, pointed out that if a female journalist had made similar comments in 2007, she would have been banned from the space, highlighting the ongoing challenges for women in sports journalism: “This reporter sounds incredibly sweet and thoughtful. I can tell she comes from a place of love. But if one of us – her female peers – did this after a postseason game in 2007, we would not have been allowed back. Women have fought really hard to be in these spaces.”
Robert Littal Defends Lynn Jones
Despite the criticism, Robert Littal, founder of Black Sports Online, came to Jones’ defense, praising her thoughtful and supportive approach. Littal argued that the backlash was unfair and out of step with the nature of sports reporting, calling out those who sought to discredit her intentions.
While the comments continue to stir debate, Jones’ interaction with the Jaguars’ head coach serves as a reminder of the fine line journalists often walk when it comes to balancing professional detachment and human empathy in sports reporting.
